Difference Between R134a and R600a Refrigerant
By Xiamen Smart Water Technology Co., Ltd. Allen Huang
R134a and R600a are commonly used refrigerators and ice machines. They are both fluorine-free refrigeration. There are obvious differences in their characteristics and application areas.

what is R134a
R134a is currently the mainstream refrigerant widely used internationally. It has stable performance, safety, non-toxicity and does not damage the atmosphere.
The chemical formula of R134a is CF₃CH₂F. Compared with traditional Freon (such as R12), R134a is more friendly to the atmosphere and will not cause ozone layer depletion.
Physical and chemical properties:
R134a is a colorless gas with a slight ether smell at room temperature and pressure;
R134a molecular weight is 102.03,
boiling point is -26.1℃,
critical temperature is 101.1℃,
critical pressure is 4.05Mpa,
liquid specific heat (30℃) is 1.51 [KJ/(kg•°C)],
ODP=0,
GWP=1200,
ASHRAE safety level is A1 (non-toxic and non-flammable);
R134a is generally compressed into liquid and stored in cylinders, and its thermal performance is similar to R12.
Main uses: R134a is mainly used in most areas where R-12 refrigerant is used, including refrigerators, freezers, water dispensers, car air conditioners, central air conditioners, dehumidifiers, cold storage, commercial refrigeration, ice cream machines, ice cream makers, refrigeration condensing units and other refrigeration equipment. It can also be used in aerosol propellants, medical aerosols, insecticide propellants, polymer (plastic) physical foaming agents, and magnesium alloy protective gases, etc. It can also be used to configure other mixed refrigerants, such as R404A and R407C.
what is R600a
R600A refrigerant is a refrigerant with excellent performance, which is characterized by strong cooling capacity, low power consumption and slow load temperature recovery.
Physical and chemical properties: Isobutane (R600a),
Molecular weight 58.12,
Boiling point -11.80℃,
Critical temperature 134.98℃,
Critical pressure 3.66MPa,
Ozone depletion potential (ODP) 0,
Global warming potential (GWP) 0.1
Main use: R600a refrigerant is mainly used to replace CFC-12 refrigerant used in refrigeration equipment such as refrigerators, water chillers and freezers.
R600A refrigerant has a lower global warming potential and less impact on the environment, making it a better choice for environmental protection. In contrast, R134A has a higher GWP value. Although it is still widely used, R600A may gradually replace R134A in the long run.
