Gout And Drinking Water

Is there a connection between gout and drinking water?

Summer is the peak season for gout. Doctor: It has something to do with the water we drink every day

In the past decade, the three diseases with the fastest growth in the number of patients are: three highs, diabetes and cancer. In addition to these three diseases, gout is gradually becoming the fourth fastest growing disease. According to relevant data, in 2024, the number of people with high uric acid in the world will reach more than 1.1 billion, and the number of gout patients will be more than 200 million. Perhaps you have friends who are suffering from gout or have the first symptoms of gout, and you need to pay special attention to prevention.

Why is gout so common in summer?

Gout is a disease caused by uric acid metabolism disorder. Its causes include: overeating, eating fatty and greasy foods, drinking alcohol, etc. Western medicine believes that gout is a disorder of purine metabolism in the human body, increased uric acid synthesis or reduced excretion, resulting in hyperuricemia.

Gout belongs to the category of "arthritis" in traditional Chinese medicine. It generally presents intermittent attacks. Acute attacks often cause severe redness, swelling, heat and pain, especially at night.

During the dog days of summer, friends and family like to get together, drink ice-cold beer, eat seafood, hot pot, and barbecue. Excessive eating can easily lead to a recurrence of gout.

To prevent gout, drink less of two kinds of "water" in the dog days

Ice beer
Wine does not contain purine and does not produce uric acid, but its metabolite is lactic acid. It is precisely this lactic acid that competes with uric acid in the kidneys to inhibit its excretion.

All alcoholic beverages can induce gout, especially beer. Beer contains carbon dioxide, which is absorbed quickly, and carbon dioxide will be converted into carbonic acid, lowering the pH value, causing uric acid excretion to be blocked.

Carbonated beverages
Drinking iced carbonated beverages in summer is really thirst-quenching, but carbonated beverages contain a lot of sugar, which is likely to cause a sharp increase in uric acid levels in the body, affecting kidney health, and easily inducing gout, kidney stones and other diseases.

Not drinking enough water will lead to high uric acid levels, and gout will damage the kidneys

In his book "Drinking Water Like This Can Cure Diseases", F. Batman, an American medical doctor and internationally renowned researcher, describes gout and kidney stones:

Gout

"As the uric acid content in the blood increases, urate begins to accumulate around the joints, causing joint pain, a symptom called "gout". This is a disease that mainly affects men. Uric acid is a product of inadequate protein metabolism, and it may be related to severe dehydration. Clinical experience tells me that increasing the amount of water you drink every day until the color of your urine disappears completely can prevent gout."

Why is gout related to drinking water?

In fact, gout is one of the clinical manifestations of osteoarthritis caused by excessive uric acid in the human body. Uric acid is the final product of cell aging decomposition and purine metabolism. There are two channels for the production of uric acid in the human body. Exogenous uric acid produced by dietary intake metabolism accounts for about 20%, and endogenous uric acid produced by cell metabolism accounts for about 80%.

Reducing the production and promoting excretion are the most effective ways to deal with uric acid. Therefore, drinking a lot of water to dilute the urine concentration can effectively reduce the formation of urate crystals, thereby reducing the formation of urate stones. Moreover, the excretion of uric acid also requires water as a medium, mainly through urine, and a small part through sweat and intestines. Therefore, drinking more water can effectively excrete the accumulated uric acid in the body.

According to a US medical survey: patients who drink 2-4 glasses of water a day have a 18% lower risk of gout attacks; patients who drink 5-8 glasses of water a day have a 43% lower risk of gout attacks; patients who drink more than 8 glasses of water a day have a 48% lower risk of gout attacks. It can be seen from this that the incidence of gout is positively correlated with the amount of water consumed, and the treatment of gout requires drinking more water.

Drinking the right water can reduce uric acid

1. Drink more than 2 liters of water a day

For people with gout and kidney stones, the amount of water they drink every day should not be less than 2 liters, and it should be increased appropriately in summer. If you sweat a lot during exercise, you must increase your water intake in time; when drinking water, you should pay attention to drinking a small amount more often, so that you can urinate in time while increasing urine volume. Remember to drink a glass of water before going to bed at night, which can also reduce the possibility of an attack.

2. Drink less pure water

Patients with a history of gout must choose natural weak alkaline natural water (pH>7.3), which not only increases the solubility of uric acid in body fluids, prevents the formation of urate precipitation, helps maintain body fluid balance, allows urine to dissolve more uric acid, and effectively excretes it. At the same time, the solid urate that has crystallized in the urinary tract will slowly be converted into uric acid and excreted from the body, making the stones smaller and smaller.

3. Drink lemon water

Lemonade usually refers to water or soda water with lemon juice or lemon slices added. It has a light sour taste and is translucent. It is a common beverage. Lemon is an alkaline fruit with a low purine content. Citrate can increase the pH value of urine and promote the dissolution of urate crystals/stones. Lemonade can also speed up the metabolism, promote urination, and reduce uric acid to a certain extent.
