Is tap water in Russia drinkable?

Although Russia has nearly a quarter of the world's fresh water resources, many people cannot drink clean tap water. In recent years, the safety and quality of drinking water have constantly stimulated the nerves of the Russian government and the public, and the attention to related products such as water treatment equipment and household water purifiers has continued to increase.

The sewage treatment facilities are old, and the water quality in Russia is worrying
65% of the tap water in Russia comes from rivers, reservoirs and lakes. Due to improper operation of sewage treatment plants, untreated industrial wastewater is discharged, domestic sewage is directly discharged into rivers, and water is used in water resource protection areas in violation of government regulations. Some cities in Russia have problems such as low water quality.
Taking the capital, Moscow, as an example, the Ivanov Reservoir, which is connected to the Volga River and supplies drinking water to Moscow citizens, has a tendency to increase the content of harmful substances in the water in recent years, and it been particularly serious in rainy seasons. The Institute of Water Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences analyzed that this means that a large amount of unmonitored sewage is flowing from drains to rivers and reservoirs.

The institute also said that most of Russia's wastewater treatment plants and pipeline facilities were built during the Soviet era. After decades of use, they are ageing very seriously. Currently, 60% of wastewater treatment plants are overloaded, and 38% of wastewater treatment plants have been in operation for 25 to 30 years and are in urgent need of reconstruction. In a year, an average of one operation accident occurs for every 5 kilometers of sewer pipes.
In addition, scale, dirt and rust in old tap water pipes also deteriorate water quality and cause secondary pollution. At present, the total length of tap water pipelines in Russia is about 561,000 kilometers, of which 66% of the water pipes are seriously worn, 38.2% of the water pipes need to be replaced, and the water pipes that need to be replaced are still increasing at a rate of 1.3% year by year.
According to data released by the Russian Federal Consumer Rights Protection and Public Welfare Supervision Bureau, due to the decline in water quality at water supply points and the disrepair of pipeline facilities, 17% of Russia's tap water does not meet hygiene standards, and about 6% of tap water has excessive microorganisms.
Russia has become the fourth-largest water treatment market
The Russian government's increasing attention to environmental protection has led to an increase in demand for water treatment equipment and technology. In order to improve the aging water supply system in the country, the Russian government began to implement the "Clean Water" plan in 2010. The national fiscal budget allocated 20 billion rubles each year to replace water supply facilities. The goal is to make the tap water used by citizens meet the qualified standards in 2014, and to make 85% of the citizens use the central water supply system by 2017.
At the end of 2013, Russia announced a support plan for the water treatment industry to encourage the introduction of advanced foreign technologies. Today, Russia has become the fourth largest market for water treatment equipment exports.
Now the Russian government is still moving forward towards the goal of providing high-quality drinking water as planned.

Home water purification equipment is popular
The water quality of water supply points has declined, making Russia's tap water basically unsuitable for direct drinking. In some places, even simply boiling the water is still harmful to health. On the one hand, it is because the water quality is too hard, and on the other hand, it is because some impurities and even microbial residues exceed the standard due to poor treatment. Because of the above reasons, Russia's home water purification equipment has a good market. If home water purification equipment is not installed, some people can only drink bottled water, but the price of bottled water is relatively expensive, and not everyone can afford it.
