Water is essential for life. Our bodies need enough water every day to ensure proper bodily functions. When it comes to drinking water, an important question arises: Is boiled tap water safe to drink?

 

Is Tap Water Healthy? Will Drinking It Frequently Harm the Body?

 

It is undeniable that many tap waters have a noticeable smell of disinfectant and chlorine. This is because, in many countries, chlorine is used to disinfect tap water.

 

A certain amount of residual chlorine must be present in the water as it leaves the water treatment plant. This helps eliminate microorganisms that may grow in the water while it flows through the pipes after leaving the treatment facility.

 

While chlorine is toxic in high amounts, the residual chlorine in tap water is very low and does not pose a health risk.

 

The World Health Organization (WHO) sets the allowable level of residual chlorine in tap water at 5 mg/L. Animal studies have shown that, within this limit, residual chlorine does not harm health. According to China's "Standards for Drinking Water Hygiene," the residual chlorine content in treated water must be at least 0.3 mg/L, with a maximum limit of 4 mg/L-both of which are well below the WHO's allowable level.

 

Liu Wenjun, a professor at Tsinghua University and former director of the Institute of Drinking Water Safety, stated that if organic matter and residual chlorine in water reach international upper limits, and a person drinks 2 liters of water a day for 70 years, the cancer risk caused by drinking tap water would be less than one in a million.

 

If you're still concerned, you can leave the tap water exposed to air for some time or boil it. This will allow the chlorine to naturally decompose and evaporate.

 

Impurities in Tap Water

 

Aside from the "strange smell," impurities can be a concern in tap water. Sometimes, when boiling water, a layer of scale-thin or thick-can form on the inside of the kettle. This water is known as "hard water," and some people worry that drinking too much of it may lead to kidney stones.

 

In reality, tap water forms scale because it contains calcium and magnesium ions. When heated, these ions create insoluble substances, such as calcium carbonate and magnesium hydroxide, which stick to the kettle's walls and form scale.

 

The "hardness" of water measures the concentration of calcium and magnesium ions. Tap water has strict safety standards when it leaves the treatment plant. China's "Standards for Drinking Water Hygiene" set the maximum hardness level of tap water at 450 mg/L (calculated as calcium carbonate), which is considered safe.

 

After boiling, some calcium and magnesium ions will precipitate out into the scale, effectively "softening" the water, and the actual hardness of the water will be lower.

 

Therefore, boiling tap water and drinking it does not pose a risk of kidney stones.

 

Boiling tap water can also kill microorganisms, precipitate excessive minerals, and evaporate volatile chemicals, making it safe to drink.

 

Two Important Reminders:

 

  1. Even though treated tap water meets safety standards, there can be a risk of secondary pollution during distribution, such as rusty pipes, improperly managed water tanks, or dust and bacteria entering unsealed systems. Regular cleaning of the water tank is important. It's advisable to install a filter and boil the water before drinking it.
  2. If tap water has a strong odor, rust, turbidity, or visible particles exceeding the standard, it should not be consumed. In this case, contact your water provider immediately.
