1. What Are Microplastics?

Microplastics are tiny plastic particles measuring less than 5 mm in diameter. These particles come from the breakdown of larger plastic waste or are intentionally manufactured for use in products like cosmetics and cleaning agents. Even smaller than microplastics are nanoplastics, which measure less than 1 μm and are virtually invisible to the naked eye.

First introduced in scientific literature in 2004, microplastics have since been identified as one of four major emerging pollutants globally. Their small size makes them especially dangerous-easily entering the environment, food chain, and human body.

2. Where Do Microplastics in Drinking Water Come From?

Recent studies confirm that both bottled water and tap water are contaminated with microplastics. In early 2024, Columbia University researchers found that a 1-liter bottle of drinking water contains an average of 240,000 plastic particles, 90% of which are nanoplastics.

But the issue isn't limited to bottled water. A global study analyzing tap water from 14 countries found that over 81% of samples contained microplastics.

These particles may originate from:

  • Degraded plastic bottles or containers
  • Industrial and municipal waste
  • Plumbing systems and water transportation pipelines
  • Household plastic products and cleaning agents

3. Are Microplastics Harmful to Human Health?

Yes-emerging evidence suggests that microplastics pose serious health risks:

  • Ingestion: Humans ingest microplastics mainly through food and water. On average, we consume around 5 grams of microplastics per week-about the weight of a credit card.
  • Tissue Penetration: Nanoplastics can pass through cellular membranes and enter the bloodstream, potentially reaching the brain, lungs, liver, and even the placenta.
  • Health Risks: Potential health concerns include:
  • Nutrient absorption interference
  • Gastrointestinal inflammation
  • Hormonal disruption
  • Potential links to cancer and immune system issues

Microplastics have been found in human feces, blood, and even internal organs, proving that they're not just passing through but potentially staying in the body.

4. Research Insights: How Much Microplastic Are We Drinking?

In 2024, research conducted in China discovered that boiling water and filtering it can remove over 80% of microplastics, especially in regions with harder water. This is because microplastics tend to aggregate with other particles and settle during boiling, especially when wrapped in minerals like calcium carbonate (scale).

Further analysis revealed that people who drink boiled water consume 2 to 5 times fewer microplastics compared to those who drink unfiltered tap water.

5. How to Remove Microplastics from Tap Water

While boiling helps, it isn't enough for long-term microplastic protection. The most reliable solution is a multi-stage under sink water filtration system. High-quality filters use:

  • Polypropylene sediment filters to trap larger plastic particles
  • Activated carbon to absorb organic contaminants
  • Ultrafiltration membranes to capture particles down to 0.01 microns
  • Reverse osmosis (RO) for removing nanoplastics and other microscopic pollutants

6. The Role of Under Sink Water Filters

Under sink water filters offer powerful and convenient protection against microplastic contamination. Key benefits include:

  • Removes up to 99% of microplastics and other pollutants
  • Preserves healthy minerals while filtering out harmful substances
  • Easy to install and maintain, perfect for home or commercial use
  • More eco-friendly than bottled water, reducing plastic waste
