Drinking water safety after floods
The global climate is "losing its temper", with more extreme weather. Hurricanes, extreme high temperatures, and once-in-a-century rainstorms have become common. Some places are suffering from drought and water shortages, while others are suffering from rainstorms, which are extremely unbalanced.
Floods cause serious economic losses and threaten people's lives, easily leading to waterborne infectious diseases such as typhoid, cholera, and dysentery. Therefore, to prevent the occurrence of post-disaster infectious diseases, it is necessary to disinfect drinking water, pay attention to drinking water hygiene, and strengthen self-protection.
How to disinfect drinking water after floods
1. Boiling disinfection
Boiling is the simplest and most effective way to disinfect. Boiling water can not only kill microorganisms but also parasite eggs. All drinking water is recommended to be boiled before drinking.
2. Disinfection with disinfectants
For centralized water supply, floods and waterlogging can easily cause the water quality of the source water to deteriorate. In the water supply, it is necessary to strengthen the management of coagulation, sedimentation and disinfection processes, appropriately increase the amount of disinfectants, increase the frequency of water quality monitoring, and ensure that the dynamic water quality meets the standard; at the same time, increase the intensity of pipeline inspections to promptly avoid secondary pollution caused by pipeline damage.
For small centralized water supply or decentralized water supply without disinfection technology, chlorination disinfection should be used as the main method. Generally, bleaching powder or bleaching powder tablets are used.
(1) Tank disinfection
Tank water disinfection is one of the important measures for decentralized water supply and prevention of intestinal infectious diseases in disaster areas.
(2) Well water disinfection
The disinfection time and frequency are determined by the amount of water used and the time of water use. Generally, public wells can be disinfected once in the morning, afternoon, and evening or twice a day, and household wells with less water use can be disinfected once a day. Calculate the amount of well water before adding disinfectants. "Well water volume (m³) = well depth × water surface diameter × 0.8"; add 10 tablets of bleaching powder or 10g of bleaching powder for every m³ (ton) of well water.
How do individuals pay attention to drinking water hygiene
1. Do not drink raw water, try to drink boiled water, bottled water or water prepared on-site by water purification equipment.
2. Do not drink water from unknown sources or contaminated water; do not use such water to rinse your mouth, wash vegetables and fruits, etc.
3. Pools, buckets and other water containers should be disinfected frequently and rinsed with clean water after disinfection before use.
4. Consciously protect the environment of drinking water sources, develop good hygiene habits, pile up domestic garbage, dump domestic sewage and faeces at designated locations, and avoid polluting water sources.
