What is the Venturi Effect?
Updated: [2025-05-19] | Xiamen Smart Water Tech. Allen Huang
The Venturi effect is a fundamental principle in fluid dynamics. It describes the phenomenon where fluid pressure decreases as fluid passes through a narrowed section of a pipe, causing the flow speed to increase. Named after the 18th-century Italian physicist Giovanni Battista Venturi, this effect has powerful applications in both everyday life and industrial engineering.

The static pressure in the first measuring tube (1) is higher than in the second measuring tube (2). The fluid velocity at "1" is lower than at "2" because the cross-sectional area at "1" is larger than at "2".

The upper surface of the wing has a relatively large curvature, and the lower surface is relatively flat. In this way, when the aircraft moves forward, the airflow speed on the upper and lower surfaces of the wing is different. In fact, the airflow speed on the upper surface is high, and the airflow speed on the lower surface is low.

This causes the air pressure on the lower surface of the wing to be high, and the air pressure on the upper surface to be low. This pressure difference provides lift for large aircraft. The faster the aircraft moves forward, the greater the lift. When the aircraft reaches the take-off speed, this lift can balance the gravity of the aircraft, and the aircraft will take off.
These are the Venturi Effect.
Imagine this: when you place your thumb over a faucet's nozzle, the water jets out faster and stronger. That's the Venturi effect in action. By narrowing the outlet, you're forcing the same volume of water through a smaller space, increasing its velocity while decreasing pressure. This principle is not just a fun trick-it's an essential design factor in high-performance kitchen boiling water taps and boiler tanks.
How Does the Venturi Effect Work?
In simplified terms:
- When fluid enters a wider section of pipe, it moves slower and the static pressure is higher.
- As the pipe narrows, the same volume of fluid must move faster to pass through.
- This increase in velocity causes a drop in pressure, which can be used to draw in or accelerate other fluids or gases.
- This is why water sprayed through a nozzle becomes more forceful, and why air feels stronger between closely spaced buildings.
Venturi Effect in our Boiler Tank
At Xiamen Smart Water Technology Co., Ltd., we engineer our boiler tanks and boiling water taps with a unique bladder Venturi expansion system. Here's what it does:
- Faster Hot Water Dispensing: The Venturi system improves water flow speed without increasing energy use, delivering near-instant boiling water.
- Energy Efficiency: Reduced pressure losses and optimized flow paths mean less wasted heat and lower electricity bills.
- Compact Design: By leveraging Venturi principles, we can make our under-sink boiling water systems smaller without sacrificing power or performance.
- Improved Mixing: The accelerated flow enhances mixing of cold and hot water, ensuring consistent temperature and stable output.
- The boiler tank uses the Bladder Venturi expansion system. When the tap is turned off, the water in the waterway will be sucked back and the tap will stop dripping.
This is a big reason why international brands trust our OEM solutions for their instant hot water dispensers.
Where Else is the Venturi Effect Used?
You'll find the Venturi effect in:
- Spray bottles – it draws liquid up a straw using air pressure.
- Vacuum cleaners – high-speed airflow generates suction.
- Ventilation systems – controls and increases airflow in buildings.
- Aircraft wings – helps reduce air pressure above the wing, generating lift.
- Wind farm placement – speeds up wind flow through tight spaces to generate more power.
This principle helps industries save energy, improve performance, and reduce environmental impact.
Why It Matters for Buyers of Boiling Water Systems
If you're sourcing a kitchen boiling water tap or OEM boiler tank, the design details matter. A product that uses the Venturi effect:
- Heats and delivers water faster
- Reduces wait time and water waste
- Extends product lifespan by reducing mechanical strain
- Keeps energy consumption low – ideal for green building projects
Our Venturi-based hot water tanks are especially popular with international brands who want advanced engineering combined with cost-effective manufacturing.
