Why do water heaters explode?

Excessive Pressure in the Tank
During heating, steam buildup increases pressure inside the storage tank. If this pressure exceeds the tank's maximum capacity, it can rupture and explode.

Faulty Pressure Relief Valve
The pressure relief valve has two critical roles:

Prevent backflow: When tap water pressure drops (e.g., during a supply cutoff), the valve stops hot water from flowing backward into pipes.

Release excess pressure: When tank pressure exceeds safe levels (typically 0.7 MPa), the valve opens to drain water or vent steam.
If the valve fails (e.g., due to scale blockage or mechanical issues), pressure cannot escape, leading to overload and potential explosion.

Damaged Tank
Over time, hard water minerals (scale) corrode the tank and heating elements. Scale buildup can:

Trap heat: Coating the heating element reduces heat dissipation, causing overheating.

Block the pressure relief valve: Preventing pressure release.

Weaken the tank: Cracks or leaks may develop, and continued use under high pressure can lead to rupture.

How to Prevent a Water Heater Explosion?

1. Regularly Inspect the Pressure Relief Valve
Check for

a) Over-tightened screws: These can restrict pressure release.
b) Scale blockages: Test the valve by opening it manually. If no water flows, it's likely clogged-contact a professional immediately.

2. Descale the Tank Annually
Mineral deposits accelerate tank corrosion and damage heating elements (including the magnesium anode). Clean the tank every 1–2 years to remove the scale.

3. Do not set the water temperature too high.
While water heaters can reach 75°C, set the thermostat to 50–55°C to reduce strain on the tank. Higher temperatures increase corrosion and explosion risks.

4. Install a Scale Inhibitor or Water Softener
Attach a scale inhibitor to the cold water inlet pipe. This pre-filter reduces hard water minerals, minimizing scale buildup in the tank and valves.

5. Use a Pressure-Free Vacuum Tank

Our instant boiling water system features a patented pressure-free vacuum tank, eliminating explosion risks by operating without internal pressure.
